Evaluation of metronidazole gel as an adjunct to conventional nonsurgical therapy in periodontitis patients

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontitis treatment with metronidazole gel. Subject and method: The study was conducted on 101 patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis (VQR) according to the classification of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). The study subjects were treated by non-surgical methods (scaling and root planning, gingival pocket debridement) and combined with Metronidazole gel pumping into the periodontal pocket. Clinical indices were assessed before treatment, 1 week and 4 weeks after treatment including gingival index (GI), simple oral hygiene index (OHI-S), periodontal pocket depth, clinical attachment loss. Result and conclusion: Non-surgical periodontal treatment using metrogyl denta gel was significantly effective in improving clinical indicators and had no side effects.
