Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of 32 patients with obstructive sleep apnea at National Geriatric Hospital. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study with 32 patients, diagnosed of obstructive sleep apnea according to the criteria of American Academy of Sleep Medicine. All patients were questioned and clinically assessed for symptoms. Result: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was found mainly in men (87.5%), mostly in the age group 40 - 59 years with snoring symptoms was 100%, daytime sleepiness was 43.7%. The number of patients who are obese and have a neck circumference greater than normal in men is more than 80%, while the rate in women is 100%. The rate of hypertension was 53.1%. 59.4% of patients had Mallampati score of degree 3 or higher, and 12.5% of patients had facial abnormalities. Conclusion: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome should be considered in patients with symptoms of snoring, daytime sleepiness and and associated respiratory and maxilla-facial abnormalities in order to have a direction for definitive diagnosis and prompt treatment.
