Abstract
Objective: To investigate the composition of body fat mass by DEXA and some related factors in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Subject and method: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 102 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared with 58 normal people who came to the 103 Military Medical Hospital. Result: Mean whole-body fat mass and abdominal fat mass in the patient group (18.55kg and 1.84kg) were higher than those in the control group (16.63kg and 1.45kg). The average proportion of whole-body fat and abdominal fat in the patient group (32.01% and 36.43%) were higher than those in the control group (29.72% and 33.09%). The obesity rate based on the proportion of whole-body fat in the patient group was 17.6% higher that in the control group (3.4%). Body fat mass in women (19.36 ± 4.43kg) was higher that in men (17.48 ± 4.27kg). The proportion of whole-body fat and abdominal fat in women (35.63% and 38.41%) were higher than those of men (27.25% and 33.81%). The proportion of abdominal fat was positively correlated with age (r = 0.274) and fasting blood glucose concentration (r = 0.189). The proportion of whole-body fat was positively correlated with age (r = 0.22). Abdominal fat mass was positively correlated with HbA1c (r = 0.196). Conclusion: Fat mass, abdominal and total body fat proportion, and obesity percentage based on whole-body fat in patients with type 2 diabetes were higher than those in the control group and related to sex, age, and fasting blood glucose.
